Short intro: Copernicus Airport is
situated in south-west part of city Wroclaw and is a main one for all
polish region called Lower-Silesia. It's been the first Ryanair
destination in Poland and still is the main one, as in march 2007, two
years after first plain was landed, it carried 500k passengers so far.
At this moment this airport is a main destination for many polish
workers in British and Irish islands (8 connections), but also target
of German, Spanish and Swedish tourists as well. This fact turned this
place to be permanently overcrowed, but many thing should change after
new terminal building (able to handle up to 7 million of passengers)
will be finished about 2011. This amount is possible, as polish
aviation market has improved rapidly for last few years, and Wroclaw is
also under permanently nearly a Ryanair base name. |
|
|
Airport & region: The main
direction from Terminal building is central train and bus stations,
situated about 9 km away. Then it's very easy to reach every place in
the region, and most important city points as well. Informations about
timetable of train service is available here.
Be aware, that polish regional train services (and Wroclaw's train
station before renovation as well) are literally much much below
European standard and some may even be shocked little bit. |
|
Transport: The easiest and cheapest
way to get to the city centre, is to catch a public bus number 406,
which has it's stop right opposite the Terminal entrance. It's
departing almost every 30 minutes (timetable) and after another 22 you are in street next to central train station (coming back timetable).
Please remember, that you must buy your own ticket first. It costs 2,40
PLN (about 0.50 Euro and 0.40 GBP) on a route (1 validation per one
entrance) and is possible to purchase at airport's newsagent, ticket
machine nest to bus stop, or a bus driver. Be aware, that ticket
machines might be broken and bus drivers are usually bad in their
English, so the best option may be if you get your own tickets at the
airport's newsagent.
Alternatively, you can get a taxi. In front of terminal building you
have one company's stand, but cheaper way will be to go 100m away to so
called “public” taxi stand. The even better way is to get a taxi by a
phone call, as then you're travelling on the cheapest tariff. One of
taxi companies are under phone number +48 (71) 96 63, or free of charge
phone number (reachable in every public phone box) 0-800 10 96 63. The
charge to the city center is approximately PLN ( Euro).
If you would like to travel on the region, the best, but not
comfortable option is by train. You can check your connections and
timetables here,
but ticket is purchasable only at the train station. Try to find
customer service center (called “Centrum Obslugi Klienta”) or anything
with InterCity logo and there you may get some English speaking on the
other side of the window ;) |
|
Car rentals: There is several Car
Rentals companies at the airport and their parking places are situated
usually very close to the terminal building. Car Rental desks are on
the arrival hall opposite to the arrival doors. You can contact them
with those phone numbers:

Region And Tourism Information: Wroclaw
is one of the biggest polish cities. It's situated even closer to
Prague and Berlin than to Warsaw, so it's present position was result
of many influences from those nations. It's also city of students, as
there is many universities here. Even when the city has been flown by
so called flood of the millennium in July 1997, when area of about 200
000 of residents was under the water, Wroclaw is still city full of
live and many places worth of see and spend our time in. With it's
reach history Wroclaw stands with many architectural masterpieces, like
for example marvellous Town Square with the Gothic City Hall, The
Gothic and Romanesque churches on the Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski),
and the baroque interiors of the University. Surely worth to visit is
in the summertime, when uncountable amount of open air activities and
festivals taking it's place. “Wroclaw Non-Stop” is one of them,
concentrating activity of many kinds like performance, music, theatre,
cinematography, etc.
Every year you may expect a live of large star, or just giant rubber
construction on half of Town Square which takes you into “Alice in
Wonderland” psychedelic world. For musical lovers of all kinds Wroclaw
has his pearly festival called “Vratislavia Cantans”, “Jazz nad Odra”
festival, or “Creamfields” for electronic beats lovers. Every year
World Guinness Record is beaten by more and more guitarists playing the
same song in one time. For cinema lovers there is “Era – Nowe
Horyzonty” festival with many ambitious movies from all over the world.
If you'd like to try some special cuisine, there are many restaurants
in Town Square's surroundings. The special one is Spiż with traditional
beer brewed only for and in this basement of City Hall. In a summertime
you may drink it on the garden, or outside just sitting with other
residents and watching some performance acts (often fire show, or short
concerts presented by gypsy troops). If you're looking for party –
there is many trendy pubs and clubs in “Pasaż Niepolda” area, but you
may find any kind of close area in the city centre. If you're looking
for something gently, Wroclaw has large zoological garden, botanical
garden, many museums, small, but beautiful Japan garden and large
pergola with water show about to starts spring this year. Also evening
walks at the river path with more than 100 bridges has it's own climate.
One of the most important reason to visit Wroclaw may be it's
cheapness. In autumn/winter of 2008 there was huge disproportion
between polish Zloty and Euro, which made this country even cheaper,
than it usually was. For example one beer in the town-centre may cost
you about 1.30 Euro and a good dinner in restaurant no more than 10
Euro. Electronic equipments and all other kind of shopping may also be
valuable and we have huge shopping centres close to the Town square
like "Galeria Dominikańska", "Pasaż Grunwaldzki" (in very last
modernised part of the city), "Magnolia" and "Arkady" shopping centres.
Also many smaller boutiques and fashion shops are all over the area.
If you would like to visit some area nearby Wroclaw, it's recommend to
visit winter centres in Szklarska Poręba and Karpacz with it's wide
range of active entertainment, recreation, and leisure. Old castle and
palace enthusiasts will also find interesting places in Lower Silesia:
monuments such as The Castle in Książ, Czocha castle and the ruins in
Bolków (anually place of large gothic rock/dark independent music
festival) and Chojnik have been attracting foreign tourist for years. |

|
Hotels / Hostels / Accomondations: The www.booking.com site has 50+ hotels in it's database and www.hostelworld.com
about 15 hostels with prices between 5.50 (Dizzy Daisy summertime only
hostel) up to 11 Euro. You may book your room/bed using that services,
or try to do it directly using for example this list. |
|
|
Sleeping at the airport: The airport
is not a base of any Airlines, so it seems to not be necessary to sleep
at the airport. The first international departures (excerpt Lufthansa's
and LOT's directions) is at about 0945 hrs. so you can wake up, make
up, and move out from your room at right time ;) Even if that you still
wanna spend your night at the airport I think the upper hall might be
the best place, as Terminals seems to be small what with comparison of
large doors may effect with getting colder very fast. To be honest – I
have no idea how about airport security as I have never heard about
example of sleeping there. |
